ÖSA Sustainability Criteria

Meeting

The Global Standard for Guest Amenity Sustainability

Product Sustainability

At ÖSA, we believe that every product placed in front of a guest is a statement. That’s why our sustainability certification begins with what matters most—what products are made of, how they’re sourced, and where they end up. Every certified amenity must be either biodegradable, compostable, refillable, or part of a circular supply chain that ensures long-term environmental integrity. We reject single-use plastics unless their inclusion is unavoidable and directly offset by higher-impact waste reduction initiatives elsewhere in the operation. All products must come from vetted manufacturers who meet our traceability, compliance, and environmental health criteria. This includes rigorous documentation, third-party verification, and proof of breakdown timelines where applicable. We don't simply approve products—we elevate those that align with a smarter, more sustainable way forward.

Waste Reduction Standards

Real Impact, Verified by Data

Sustainability without measurement is just marketing. At ÖSA, our certification is tied to real, quantifiable waste reduction. We require our Silver and Gold certified partners to demonstrate the elimination of at least one metric ton of waste per year—achieved through strategic product replacements across guest touchpoints. That includes slippers, toothbrushes, vanity kits, combs, and other high-frequency disposables. Using our proprietary ÖSA Wastage Calculator™, we gather and validate data directly from our partners to ensure the numbers hold up—both for our standards and for theirs. The calculator takes into account room count, occupancy, average length of stay, and item distribution practices to generate an accurate, tailored impact profile. These metrics are not only used to grant certification but also shared with partners to communicate verified sustainability performance with investors, stakeholders, and guests.

Sustainability Guests Can See, Feel, and Trust

Today’s guests expect more than recycled paper and linen reuse cards—they want proof that their stay isn’t costing the planet. That’s why ÖSA-certified partners are required to make their sustainability practices visible and accessible throughout the guest journey. Whether through discreet in-room QR codes, digital sustainability dashboards, or printed materials, properties must clearly communicate the changes they’ve implemented and the impact they’ve made. We also encourage the adoption of “opt-in” amenity systems, where guests can request what they need rather than receiving a pre-set kit that often goes unused. This not only reduces waste—it shows guests that your brand values intention over excess. With ÖSA certification, sustainability becomes a part of the guest experience, not just a backend decision.
